To work your way through the story you will need to solve a number of sums. On every odd page there are two sets of sums. Both sets will produce the same answer which you must put into the boxes provided. The set on the left can be solved with a good knowledge of multiplication tables and some careful addition. The set on the right are best worked out by using a calculator. It would be a good idea to use both methods and solve both sets as this will ensure that you get the right answer. It is very important that you get the correct answers as just one mistake will make it impossible to make the pictures! The boxes, where you place your answer, are separated by commas and enclosed by brackets. This is because your answer is really a coordinate. Coordinates are ordered pairs of numbers. They allow you to pinpoint or plot an exact position on a grid. The first number tells you how many lines you need to move along and the second number, after the comma, tells you how many lines you need to move up. (It may help you to remember that the A of "along" comes before the U of "up" in the alphabet!) So, for the answer 23, you move two lines to the right, from the bottom left corner of the grid (0,0), and then three lines up. Where the 2 line and the 3 line cross, is where your first point is located. When you have found where it is, put a little dot on the grid and write 1 next to it. You then need to find where the second point is, because this is the direction in which your pencil will be travelling! When your pencil has arrived at the second point, you must then work out where its next destination will be, and so on, until you reach the last coordinate. This process of moving from coordinate to coordinate, in sequence, will generate the beginnings of a picture. But that's not all! It will be up to you and your imagination, with a little bit of help from some descriptions, to add details and colour to the pictures you can make!
